Don’t seek a sign
Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.” John 4:48
I feel like this happens a lot in today’s world. People move from church to church or ministry to ministry looking for that perfect preacher or dynamic speaker, maybe even the most appealing worship team. It is almost like a form of entertainment when people go to church only for what they want to get out of it. It becomes self-centered and focused only on what is in it for them, never considering when or where they can serve others and how they can help make the service better for visitors or new comers.
That is the problem Jesus was having. People were following Him because they wanted to see a miracle or some supernatural happening. They were not really interested in His message or even the love He has for all people. Some were even following Him to try to catch Him in breaking the law or messing up in some way.
In today’s reading, when someone did come to Jesus in faith and ask for His help, Jesus just went ahead and healed His child right were the child was at home away from the mob that was trying to see these great things. He gave this rebuke to the people and said unless you see signs, you will not believe.
Hopefully, this is not the way we think today. Yes, we do want to see God moving and there is great energy and excitement when physical manifestations of God’s Spirit shows up in a service, but that is not what we are to be after. Just like God, our heavenly Father is after our heart and love, He wants us to be after His heart and basking in His eternal love for us. A love so great that He didn’t spare His most precious gift, His only Son, Jesus. He loved so much that He gave His only Son to pay the price for our sin, so we do not have to pay that price one day for ourselves. Isn’t that enough?
Today I want to encourage you receive God’s love for you. Put away any idea or searching for the perfect place to go to church that does things the way you like them done. Instead, make yourself and your life available to Him for service and begin to serve others where God has planned for you to fit into the body of believers.
Today’s scripture reading John 4:46-48
46 So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.
47 When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.
48 Then Jesus said to him, “Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe.”
49 The nobleman said to Him, “Sir, come down before my child dies!”
50 Jesus said to him, “Go your way; your son lives.” So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.
51 And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, “Your son lives!”
52 Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, “Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him.”
53 So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, “Your son lives.” And he himself believed, and his whole household.
54 This again is the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
