Deuteronomy 14

First things first

“You shall truly tithe all the increase of your grain that the field produces year by year. ~ Deuteronomy 14:22

God’s provision in your life is truly one of the greatest ways to trust Him. But before you consider how God provides, it is important to settle who truly comes first in your life. Today’s scripture reading reveals that tithing was not merely a financial practice. It was a spiritual declaration. Each year, as the harvest came in, God’s people were to set apart a tenth. This act reminded them that their increase was not self-produced but that it flowed from the hand of a faithful Provider. Tithing kept their hearts humble and their eyes on their provider.

As a child of God in today’s world, you may not be gathering grain from fields, but you still experience increase. Income, business opportunities, creative ideas, influence, and open doors all represent harvest. The principle remains the same. When you honor God first, you invite His blessing over what remains.

Below are three points to consider as you read today’s scripture chapter.

1. Tithing establishes priority

Giving the first portion declares that God is first in your life. It moves Him from a place of convenience to a place of honor and trust.

When income arrives, calculate your tithe immediately and set it aside before paying other expenses. It is to be one tenth of the first fruits of all your increase, not after what is automatically deducted.  Make sure your giving becomes a consistent discipline. Pray over your tithe and verbally acknowledge and remember that everything you have comes from Him. When you give first, you line up your heart and your resources around His Lordship and declare that you trust His provision before anything else.

2. Tithing builds trust and opens the door to supernatural provision

Tithing stretches your faith because it requires you to release control. It challenges fear that whispers you may not have enough. Yet Scripture consistently reveals that obedience in giving positions you for God’s provision. When you honor Him with the first portion, you open the door for Him to move in ways beyond natural calculation and circumstances.

If giving feels uncomfortable, choose obedience even before you feel confident. Trust grows through action. Keep a journal of specific ways God provides, unexpected opportunities, financial wisdom, favor, or timely resources. Resist the urge to withhold your tithe during tight seasons. Instead, lean into prayer and expect God to show Himself faithful. Supernatural provision does not always appear as sudden abundance. Sometimes it shows up as multiplied impact, protected resources, creative solutions, or peace that guards your heart. When you tithe, you are not losing. You are partnering with Heaven and making an eternal investment.

3. Tithing extends eternal impact

In Deuteronomy 14, the tithe supported worship and also cared for the Levite, the foreigner, the fatherless, and the widow. Giving strengthened the house of God and met the needs of people. Your obedience today still carries that dual purpose.

View your tithe as an investment in lives being transformed through ministry and missions.
Pray intentionally for the leaders and outreach efforts your giving supports. Ask God if He is inviting you to give beyond the tithe in moments where a specific need is placed before you.
Your generosity becomes part of stories you may never hear this side of eternity.

Tithing was always something in my heart to do, but I didn’t take that step of faith to give consistently until my husband Jack and I were married. My desire was to give my heavenly Father first place in my life and to make Him Lord over every area, starting with our finances. When we began tithing, something shifted in the resources we were entrusted with. It was subtle, but instead of trying to stretch our monthly income to last the whole month and falling short time and again, we found that we had enough without the constant struggle. I could not fully explain what happened, and it didn’t seem like we had changed anything except returning what already belonged to God.

It was a clear step of faith for us, and we never considered reducing our giving until things felt more secure. We understood that tithing had always been about trust, not convenience. It became the first step in stewarding all our finances wisely and according to the Holy Spirit’s direction. As we remained consistent, even during the times when it felt like a sacrifice and stretched our comfort, we witnessed God’s provision in ways that could not be explained naturally. Unexpected opportunities came, needs were met at just the right time, wisdom came for decisions that preserved resources and peace replaced anxiety and conflict. Tithing anchored our hearts in the truth that He is our Provider, not our paycheck or position.

Today I want to encourage you to honor God with the first portion of your increase and trust Him with the rest. Let your tithe be an act of worship, a declaration of faith, and a doorway to supernatural provision. As you put Him first, you will discover that He is faithful to sustain, multiply, and guide you in ways that exceed what you could accomplish on your own. Always remember that He can do more with 90% than you can do with 100%.

Today’s scripture reading: Deuteronomy 14

1“You are the children of the Lord your God; you shall not cut yourselves nor shave the front of your head for the dead.

2For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.

3“You shall not eat any detestable thing. 4These are the animals which you may eat: the ox, the sheep, the goat,

5the deer, the gazelle, the roe deer, the wild goat, the mountain goat, the antelope, and the mountain sheep.

6And you may eat every animal with cloven hooves, having the hoof split into two parts, and that chews the cud, among the animals.

7Nevertheless, of those that chew the cud or have cloven hooves, you shall not eat, such as these: the camel, the hare, and the rock hyrax; for they chew the cud but do not have cloven hooves; they are unclean for you.

8Also the swine is unclean for you, because it has cloven hooves, yet does not chew the cud; you shall not eat their flesh or touch their dead carcasses.

9“These you may eat of all that are in the waters: you may eat all that have fins and scales.

10And whatever does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean for you.

11“All clean birds you may eat.

12But these you shall not eat: the eagle, the vulture, the buzzard,

13the red kite, the falcon, and the kite after their kinds;

14every raven after its kind;

15the ostrich, the short-eared owl, the sea gull, and the hawk after their kinds;

16the little owl, the screech owl, the white owl,

17the jackdaw, the carrion vulture, the fisher owl,

18the stork, the heron after its kind, and the hoopoe and the bat.

19“Also every creeping thing that flies is unclean for you; they shall not be eaten.

20“You may eat all clean birds.

21“You shall not eat anything that dies of itself; you may give it to the alien who is within your gates, that he may eat it, or you may sell it to a foreigner; for you are a holy people to the Lord your God.

“You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.

22“You shall truly tithe all the increase of your grain that the field produces year by year.

23And you shall eat before the Lord your God, in the place where He chooses to make His name abide, the tithe of your grain and your new wine and your oil, of the firstborn of your herds and your flocks, that you may learn to fear the Lord your God always.

24But if the journey is too long for you, so that you are not able to carry the tithe, or if the place where the Lord your God chooses to put His name is too far from you, when the Lord your God has blessed you,

25then you shall exchange it for money, take the money in your hand, and go to the place which the Lord your God chooses.

26And you shall spend that money for whatever your heart desires: for oxen or sheep, for wine or similar drink, for whatever your heart desires; you shall eat there before the Lord your God, and you shall rejoice, you and your household.

27You shall not forsake the Levite who is within your gates, for he has no part nor inheritance with you.

28“At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates.

29And the Levite, because he has no portion nor inheritance with you, and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow who are within your gates, may come and eat and be satisfied, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.

Journal:

  • What fears or hesitations surface when I think about tithing?
  • Am I giving first or only when it feels comfortable?
  • Where have I already seen God provide in unexpected ways?
  • What step of obedience can I take this week to trust Him more deeply with my resources?
