Do His will

For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”~ Mark 3:35

God has always desired a family. This was in His heart even before creation. He intentionally designed each life with purpose and prepared a path for every person who belongs to Him. He placed gifts inside each one of us and provided opportunities to use those gifts so others could be drawn to Him. God made it clear that Jesus is the only way to salvation, yet Jesus also gave us insight into how we live as members of God’s family here and now.

In this scripture passage, Jesus’ natural family came looking for Him while He is teaching a crowd. Unable to reach Him, they sent word that they are outside waiting to see Him. Jesus responded by redefining family, not by blood or proximity, but by receiving and following His way. He declared that whoever does the will of God is His brother, sister, and mother. This statement is still true for us today.

This brings up some very personal questions for each one of us to consider. Those questions are: Are you walking in the will of God? Are you living out the plans He created you for? Are your choices shaped by the principles He established from the beginning? This is not about earning salvation. Salvation is found in the cleansing blood and sacrifice of Christ Jesus alone. This is about living as an active, contributing part of God’s family. His will positions your life to advance His kingdom, not just functioning successfully within the systems of the world. While being responsible and productive in society matters, it is not your deepest calling. You are a child of the most high God, empowered to walk humbly and boldly in this life through His Word and His Spirit.

Below are some practical ways you can step deeper into your place in the family of God each day:

  • Begin each day by asking God to show you one specific way to follow  Him that day, then choose to act on it.
  • Examine how you spend your time, energy, and resources, and ask whether they are contributing to God’s purposes or only personal comfort.
  • Use the abilities God has given you to serve others intentionally, whether through encouragement, generosity, leadership, or prayer.
  • Stay grounded in Scripture so God’s way shapes your decisions rather than pressure, emotion, or convenience.

Today I want to encourage you to look at the blessings in your life and recognize that they are not only for your enjoyment but also for reaching the world around you. Do not consume everything on your personal desires or become distracted by the cares and attractions of this world. Place what you have into the Lord’s hands and allow Him to use it for kingdom progress. As you choose to follow His direction in daily moments and faithfulness over comfort, you will walk in the fullness of your calling and live as one who truly belongs to God’s family.

Today’s scripture reading: Mark 3:31-35

31 Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him.

32 And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside seeking You.”

33 But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?”

34 And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers!

35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”

Journal:

  • What does doing the will of God look like in my daily life right now?
  • Where might I be settling for comfort instead of obedience?
  • What gifts or resources has God given me that I have not fully offered back to Him?
  • What is one step I can take this week to live more intentionally as part of God’s family?
