The power of His Word
Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground. John 18:6
Do we really have any idea of how much power is available to us through God’s Word? Yes, we know it brings comfort in hard times, peace and tumultuous times, wisdom in times of decisions and encouragement in discouraging times. However, I don’t think anyone fully comprehends the power that God’s word can actually put on the outward circumstances that we face from day to day. In fact, God’s word can actually change the trajectory of your entire life when you begin to live by it.
Tithing alone can transform your financial state from the stress and anxiety of debt to the freedom and financial peace of abundance and you don’t even have to speak the Word for that to happen. Just imagine how much more can be changed in your life when you begin to say the things about yourself and your circumstances that God has already said about you in His word. Things like you are more than a conqueror and you are a child of the eternal God. That doesn’t even take into account the supernatural power that takes place when you invite Jesus into your life as your Lord and Savior. So why do we continue to accept the limitation that this world would put on us when such power is available?
In today’s reading, Judas brought a detachment of troops and officers from the chief priests to arrest Jesus. I know He brought a lot of guards with him because he didn’t think they would be able to take Jesus. Judas had witnessed the power that was at work in His life every day of His ministry. Jesus proved him to be right when they came to Him and He asked: Who are you looking for? When they told Him, all Jesus said was: “I am” and they all fell down. It is really quite humorous to me and also very sobering at the same time. There can be no doubt after reading this passage that Jesus laid down His life and went willingly with the guard, humbling Himself to the suffering and shame He experienced on His journey to the cross. He did it for you and He did it for me. He could have walked right through them, and they wouldn’t be able to hold Him. In fact, He actually did do that at another time when a group tried to throw Him off a cliff.
Here is the point! When the guards came to get Jesus, they would have just taken Him if He hadn’t spoken. When He spoke His name with the power of the Holy Spirit behind it, that is when the falling down happened. If He had kept His mouth shut, they would have just led Him away peacefully. Speaking God’s word in the power and the authority of the Holy Spirit will make every circumstance in your life fall down. It may not happen overnight, but if you continue to put pressure on whatever force is coming against you with the power of the Word of God, you will break through every dilemma with the Words He has given you in scripture. The seen realm will have to surrender to the unseen power of God’s word when you speak it in faith, every time.
Today I want to encourage you to consider the power of God’s Word. Start looking for the right passage to apply against whatever enemy is coming at you at this point in your life. Begin to speak out those promises in faith and power over the situation you are facing and thank your Father in Heaven that the energy of His words are putting pressure on those outward circumstances to turn them for His glory. Don’t let your enemy crush you under a load of life’s struggles. Draw your sword of the Spirit, the word of God and begin swinging it in combat until every evil is struck down. You have the authority and ability to speak the living words of your almighty God and Father, don’t let the forces of evil reap havoc in your life any longer. Take your authority in God’s word and see your victory today!
Today’s scripture reading: John 18:1-11
1 When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, which He and His disciples entered.
2 And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.
3 Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.
4 Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, “Whom are you seeking?”
5 They answered Him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am He.” And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.
6 Now when He said to them, “I am He,” they drew back and fell to the ground.
7 Then He asked them again, “Whom are you seeking?” And they said, “Jesus of Nazareth.”
8 Jesus answered, “I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,”
9 that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, “Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none.”
10 Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.
11 So Jesus said to Peter, “Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?”
