Follow the Leader

Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives.  Galatians 5:25

Did you ever played the game “follow the leader” when you were a child?  The idea was, after one person was chosen to be the ”leader” the rest of the group would follow and copy everything the “leader” did.  If you messed up, you were out of the game. As the “leader” you couldn’t mess up because your were leading.

Today’s scripture is about following the leading of the Holy Spirit.  Not exactly the same as playing a game of follow the leader, but the concept is comparable.  Following the leading of the Holy Spirit of God is like following the example of Jesus.  Since He was led in this world by God’s Spirit, we can learn what His life looked like and follow that example.  That is certainly one of the ways, but there are other ways too.  Following the wisdom and direction in God’s Word can be one of the ways we follow the Spirit.  Since God’s Word was given by the Holy Spirit to the men and women that wrote it, it makes sense that it would be following His direction to listen and copy it.

Then there is the voice of the Holy Spirit on the inside that gives us step by step instruction and direction for daily living.  Specific things that aren’t necessarily in the scripture.  Things like God’s personal plan and assignment for your life.  Where you should work or where you should live.  Who you should marry, things like that.  The best way to tune into that voice is to spend quiet time getting familiar with His voice and conversing with Him privately, on a daily basis.  Get to know His voice in the little things, then when the big issues come, you will already know what He sounds like, so you can stay on track.  One clue is that He always backs up His inner voice with His written Word.  The voice of the Holy Spirit on the inside of you will never and I mean never contradict His written Word.  You can even ask Him (if you are not sure) to give you two or three passages of scripture to confirm what you are hearing on the inside.  He will, I promise!  God’s Word is His fail-safe.

Today I want to encourage you to follow the leader!  Follow the leading of the Holy Spirit in your daily living.  Get His input on your day to day activities and listen as He guides you into all truth.  Many are praying for God to lead them into some great world wide ministry, but when God says, “I need you to get up a half hour early each day to talk with me and get to know my voice first, they are not even interested in that direction.  That is way to small and insignificant.  Yet, that is the very thing that will lead them to the next thing He has for them.  Since we are living by the Spirit, lets start following the Spirit in every area of our lives and let’s start consenting to connect in every way, in the big things and the little.
