Get rid of weights
“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.” Hebrews 12:1
Chapter 12 of Hebrews continues talking about the old testament saints and describes them now as a cloud of witnesses, or engaged spectators as the race continues that they once ran in. It says that even though these witnesses have gone on, they are still involve in what God is doing today by surrounding us with the stories of their lives that encourage us to lay aside our own weights/distractions and the sin that holds us back from the things God has for us to accomplish. These distractions are things such as media, possessions or people that draw us away from the plan of God. they can also be worry, fear, anger, anxiety . . . Things that we hold on to that are not necessarily sin, but keep us from seeking first God’s kingdom and righteousness. We are also encouraged to get rid of the sin that we get trapped in continually. It is our choice to put these things away and then run with endurance and patience in the “race” of life that is before us. This passage says that when we try to live a Christian life with these things attached to us, they are like weights that disable us from winning in life. The writer encourages us here to put these things away.
The very next verse tells us how we can do this. It’s by looking to Jesus, the beginning and ending of our faith and our ultimate example. He completed the work God sent Him to do here not because He was the perfect Son of God, but because He kept His attention on the joy that was set before Him, the prize. He is our example and standard for living the “faith” life! He lived this example by keeping His eye on His prize/purpose which was the end result and the promise that God made to Him that He would be the first born of many children of God.
Today I encourage you to keep your eye on the prize and purpose of what God has not only promised you, but also what He has called you to. Examine your heart and life and notice if you have any weights or sin that is causing distractions and set backs in your life. Ask the Lord for strength, faith, and the desire to get rid of them and cast them off so that you can complete, down to the last detail, the plans God has for your life and run out your purpose in victory!
