The great exchange
“For He (God) made Him (Jesus) who knew no sin to be sin for us, so we could become the righteousness of God in Him (Jesus).” 2 Corinthians 5:21
Now that’s a good deal! There has never been a greater offer before or since. This is God’s offer. He made an offer that seems impossible to believe that anyone would refuse. Here it is: God offered up Jesus for my/your sin and in exchange He gave us His very own righteousness! It’s almost too good to believe. In fact, many don’t believe it. For years I didn’t’ believe it myself. I mean I knew that Jesus died to save me, but I thought I was always going to be an old sinner saved by grace. Then one day I came across this scripture that says He took my sin and gave me His righteousness. This means I have right standing and relationship with God. It’s the only way I can have a relationship with God and become one of His children.
Here’s the thing, when Jesus paid for my sin on the cross, He paid for all sin for all time. So even though I am not perfect and still sin, that sin is already paid for, past, present, and future. My sin is under His blood. Not only is my sin under His blood, but God doesn’t even acknowledge that my sin ever existed. He chooses to remember my sin no more. After I have received Jesus, it’s like I never lived in sin. God sees me in Christ Jesus, and He is perfect. Hebrews 1:16-17 says, “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws into their hearts, and in their minds I will write them,” then He adds, “Their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.” Glory to God!
So the next time you think, “I’m just an old sinner saved by grace,” think again because you were a sinner BUT you got saved by God’s grace. Now you are a new creation in Christ Jesus that never existed before!! They are two separate things. You were dead, but now you are alive! You can be a sinner, or you can be saved by God’s changing grace. I choose saved by grace!
Today I want to encourage you to rejoice in your salvation in Christ Jesus. Give Him honor and glory for the offer of new life He has given us. Remember He paid the price for all sin for all time and He will never have to do it again. We are the righteousness of God and can grow closer to Him every day!
