Follow Me

Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”  Mark 1:17

“Follow Me.”  This was the call that Jesus gave the fishermen on the shore that day.  “I will make you fishers of men.”  Not the greatest sales pitch you ever heard, but it was all they needed to hear.  He didn’t say “Follow me and I will make you great leaders of the New Testament church one day,” though that did happen.  He didn’t say “Follow me and I will fill you with my Spirit so you can do my signs and wonders,” though they did that too. He didn’t even say “Follow me and I will make you a great warrior in my military.”  Which is what they were expecting to become.  He didn’t tell them everything they would have to go through and everything they would accomplish.  He only told them you are still going to be fisherman, only what you fish for will change.

He is still calling people to follow Him, today.  He calls us to follow Him to reach more people.  He calls us to do what we are doing, but with the focus of bringing more lives to Him for salvation.  He doesn’t tell us we will follow Him into storms, though we will.  He doesn’t tell us we will follow Him through dry places, but there will be some. He doesn’t even tell us about the rough waters we will have to go through, but He does say “Follow Me and I will take you through whatever happens to victory.”

We don’t know all the things we will face in this life, and the truth is we will go through struggles with or without following Him.  The difference is with Him, He always causes us to triumph! (2 Cor. 2:14) We are more than conquerors (Romans 8:31) and our faith to follow gives us victory every time. (1 John 5:4)

Today I want to encourage you to “follow Him.”  I can’t promise you there will never be trouble, and I can’t promise you the road will always be smooth.  I can promise you He will never leave you and I can promise He will empower you to overcome.  It will not be the smooth and quiet life you think you want, but it will be the best and most fulfilled life.  Trust Him today and follow Him on the path of harvesting souls for eternity.  It will be an exciting adventure and it will be worth all that you go through when you meet Him face to face.

Today’s scripture reading: Mark 1:16-20

16 And as He walked by the Sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.

17 Then Jesus said to them, “Follow Me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”

18 They immediately left their nets and followed Him.

19 When He had gone a little farther from there, He saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the boat mending their nets.

20 And immediately He called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired servants, and went after Him.
