Magnify the Lord
And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord, Luke 1:46
This portion of scripture is very famously known as Mary’s song of praise. At this point and time, she was probably still in awe of what had happened to her and not quite sure about it all. I’m sure she was considering all that she would be going through and if she was anything like the rest of us, most likely she was nervous and afraid.
Here she speaks in faith of God’s goodness and the truth of Who He is. She says:
- My soul magnifies the Lord, He has looked on me in my lowly state.
- He Who is mighty has done great things for me, Holy is His name.
- His mercy is on those who fear Him from generation to generation.
- He has shown strength with His arm and scattered the proud in their imaginations.
- He has put down the mighty from their thrones and lifted up the humble
- He has filled the hungry with good things, the rich He has sent away empty.
- He helped Israel to remember His mercy.
These are wonderful acts of God that Mary proclaimed that day, but they are also true for all of us today. Certainly, Mary was chosen at that time to deliver God’s Son into the world, but the praise she spoke is true for us in this time.
This is a great example of how we can praise our loving Father through the things we are not sure about, anxious over and afraid of. When we face the uncertainties of life, praise needs to be our go to. When life gets bumpy and we don’t see the outcome of success on the horizon, we can still magnify the Lord to make Him bigger in our lives than any other feeling or circumstance.
Today I want to encourage you to make God bigger in your life. Whatever you are going through or what ever you are up against, remind yourself that God is bigger and remember the things He has brought you through already in life. He will not let you down as you trust Him through every storm, but you must magnify Him, not the problem. Get in the practice today of using your struggles as a cue to praise and worship. Each time you feel the cares and worries of life coming on you, immediately turn to praising God for all He is and all He has done. You can even use the truths from Mary’s song, but in all you do, say: My soul magnifies the LORD because He is good and always does good things.
Today’s scripture reading: Luke1:46-56
46 And Mary said: “My soul magnifies the Lord,
47And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.
48 For He has regarded the lowly state of His maidservant; For behold, henceforth all generations will call me blessed.
49 For He who is mighty has done great things for me, And holy is His name.
50 And His mercy is on those who fear Him From generation to generation.
51 He has shown strength with His arm; He has scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts.
52 He has put down the mighty from their thrones, And exalted the lowly.
53 He has filled the hungry with good things, And the rich He has sent away empty.
54 He has helped His servant Israel, In remembrance of His mercy,
55 As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and to his seed forever.”
56 And Mary remained with her about three months, and returned to her house.
