Called and sent

Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases. He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick. Luke 9:1-2

I don’t remember the exact day I was called into ministry, but I was trained for it since the day I was born.  I don’t remember the day I was sent out to minister to others, but I began doing it even as a young child in my grade school to friends there.  The calling was there when I was born into a Pastor’s family, but I wasn’t sent until I went out into the world.

In today’s reading, Jesus called His disciples to Him and gave them power and authority over the works of darkness.  They had been with Him for some time before He sent them out into the cities.  They were being trained from the first day they began walking with Jesus, but it was after they had done some growing and developing in their faith that they were sent out into the world to minister.

Jesus told the disciples that their message would be received by some and not by others.  He wanted them to know and expect that there would be some resistance, but that was not to stop their mission.  He told them to just shake it off when they were rejected, and it would be a testimony to the world around them.

Today, He calls and sends us too.  We are called to learn and walk with Him through His Words and Holy Spirit.  He is with us guiding and empowering each one of His people to reach others in our lives with the message of His great love and salvation.  We do this by telling them how His love has changed our lives and those we know.

Today I want to encourage you to put yourself in training.  Hear His call to worship, praise and salvation.  Begin to learn of Him and let His love transform your life by spending time with Him and walking close to Him each day.  Then when you are sent out, you will be different than you were before.  You are now a child of the God in heaven.  You have been changed from the inside out.  You no longer have to try to behave a certain way, you have become a new creation in Christ Jesus.  You are called to Him and sent by Him to the world you have been placed in to lead to Him. Expect some opposition, but shake it off as a testimony to those who would be reached.

Today’s scripture reading: Luke 9:1-6

1 Then He called His twelve disciples together and gave them power and authority over all demons, and to cure diseases.

2 He sent them to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.

3 And He said to them, “Take nothing for the journey, neither staffs nor bag nor bread nor money; and do not have two tunics apiece.

4 “Whatever house you enter, stay there, and from there depart.

5 And whoever will not receive you, when you go out of that city, shake off the very dust from your feet as a testimony against them.”

6 So they departed and went through the towns, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.
