He Came Back from Death

But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ” Luke 16:31

Jesus rose from the dead. If you are Christian, then you believe this and in fact your very salvation is based on Jesus overcoming death.  He was sacrificed for our sin and paid the penalty for all sin.  Then after being dead for three days, He came back to this world as a conquering Victor!  If you are a believer than you know it is true.  Yet, how many in the world today have heard the message of God’s great salvation through the sacrifice of His only Son and still do not believe?

That was Jesus’ point in the reading today.  He told a story about a rich man and a beggar that died.  The beggar went to paradise, not because he was a beggar, but because he was a believer.  The rich man went to the place of torment.  Again, not because he was rich, simply because he didn’t believe. In this account, the rich man could actually see the place where Lazarus was and told father Abraham what to do.  This man still thought he had control over his circumstances.  He soon found out that he did not.  When he finally realized that there was nothing that could be done for him now that he was dead, he again tried to get Abraham to do something for his family that were still living.  He wants Abraham to send Lazarus, of all people back to warn his family what was to come after they die in their sin.  Like they would listen to a beggar?  However, the rich man thought if someone came back from the dead, then all would believe.  Abraham wisely told him that they already have Moses and the prophets words in writing and they would have to believe through their words.

Now we know that even though Jesus came back from the dead, many still did not and do not believe.  He gave His all for all people and even though there is an empty tomb, many will not listen.

What about you?  Are you trusting and believing in salvation through God’s great plan of redemption through His Son Jesus? Or are you of those who would say “If someone were to come back from the dead and tell me about it, then I would believe.”  The truth is someone has come back from the dead and that someone is Jesus our Savior.  He will tell you all about it in His Word and through His Spirit if you really want to hear about it.  The key is that you must desire to know the truth and then to believe it when you do hear it.  Only then can you receive that great salvation by faith through His grace!

Today I want to encourage you to seek out that great plan of salvation.  Ask God the Father to show you the truth through His Word and Spirit.  Ask Him to send people your way that can teach you and show you how to receive.  If you have already received Him into your life, ask Him to send you to those who still need to know.  Be the witness of His life and death in this world through your life and help those who want to know the truth to find it.

Today you can receive His great salvation by praying this prayer and committing your life to Him: God in heaven, I know I’m a sinner and I need a Savior.  I want to turn away from my sinful life to the life You have planned for me.  Please forgive my sins, cleanse me from my past, and make me new today.  I know Your Son, Jesus died for me.  I believe in my heart that You raised Him from the dead.  At this very moment, I accept, confess, and proclaim Jesus as my personal Lord and Savior . . . to be Lord of my life from this day forward.  I now have a right relationship with God my Father through this salvation in Jesus. I thank You for giving me Your Holy Spirit to guide me and to empower me to accomplish the things You have planned for my life in Jesus’ name, Amen

Today’s scripture reading: Luke 16:14-31

14 Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him.

15 And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.

16 “The law and the prophets were until John. Since that time the kingdom of God has been preached, and everyone is pressing into it.

17 And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away than for one tittle of the law to fail.

18 “Whoever divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery; and whoever marries her who is divorced from her husband commits adultery.

19 “There was a certain rich man who was clothed in purple and fine linen and fared sumptuously every day.

20 But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate,

21 desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.

22 So it was that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels to Abraham’s bosom. The rich man also died and was buried.

23 And being in torments in Hades, he lifted up his eyes and saw Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

24 “Then he cried and said, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame.’

25 But Abraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things; but now he is comforted and you are tormented.

26 And besides all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed, so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us.’

27 “Then he said, ‘I beg you therefore, father, that you would send him to my father’s house,

28 for I have five brothers, that he may testify to them, lest they also come to this place of torment.’

29 Abraham said to him, ‘They have Moses and the prophets; let them hear them.’

30 And he said, ‘No, father Abraham; but if one goes to them from the dead, they will repent.’

31 But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded though one rise from the dead.’ ”
