Increase our faith

And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.” Luke 17:5

You can increase your faith!  In fact, we all can.  The disciples asked Jesus after He told them about forgiveness to increase their faith.  They had always been taught an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.  This was a radical new teaching, and the disciples knew that they needed to take a step of faith to be able to walk in this degree of forgiveness.

So, how do we increase our faith?  Romans 10:17 says that faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God.  When the disciples heard the first time that they needed to live a life of forgiveness, they started asking at that point to hear it again.  They needed His reinforced words to get from their head down into their hearts.  They knew that the only way this was going to happen was if they heard it again from Jesus.  In that way, they would know they were doing the right thing when forgiving others because they had heard His direction on forgiveness many times.

Getting God’s Word on a subject is actually what we need to do for whatever we are taking a step of faith toward, and we may need to read His Word on the matter many times before we are confident in taking that step.  God’s Word is the foundation and the building blocks that we need for every decision in life, and we must hear it repeatedly so that we can establish our way in this dark world.  If you think about it, you are making every decision in your life based on something that you hear.  It could be based on something you heard on the news that others are doing in the world.  Maybe it is something you have heard your friends talking about?  It can even be what you have heard about styles and trends in today’s society.  Whatever the case, you are walking your life’s path based on an influence in your life and taking steps because of what you have been hearing and hearing.  Why not make what you are listening to be the Word of God. His Words are true and will never lead you down the wrong path.

Today I want to encourage you to increase your faith.  Spend time reading God’s Word out loud so you can hear it in your ears. Read the passage many times until it is planted in the ground of your heart.  You will begin to feel hope for your future, and you will begin to experience faith rising up in the core of your being.  Now you are ready to take that step to the next thing God’s Spirit is leading you too, but I have to warn you that you need at least as much of God’s Word in your life as you are getting from the world around you.  In that way, God’s Word will be loud enough to eliminate the chatter of all the voices trying to pull you in the wrong direction.  Start increasing your faith steps today by hearing and hearing what God has to say to you through His Word. Only then will you be making decision without a regrettable outcome.

Today’s scripture reading: Luke 17:5-10

5 And the apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith.”

6 So the Lord said, “If you have faith as a mustard seed, you can say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

7 And which of you, having a servant plowing or tending sheep, will say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come at once and sit down to eat’?

8 But will he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare something for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me till I have eaten and drunk, and afterward you will eat and drink’?

9 Does he thank that servant because he did the things that were commanded him? I think not.

10 So likewise you, when you have done all those things which you are commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants. We have done what was our duty to do.’ ”
