 The Presence of God Changes Everything

Then David danced before the Lord with all his might. ~  2 Samuel 6:14

Have you ever walked into a room and immediately noticed something was different? Maybe someone had baked fresh cookies, lit a favorite candle, or turned on Christmas music in October. Suddenly the atmosphere changed. It’s amazing how a unique personal touch can completely transform a room. The presence of God does the same thing in our lives.

Today’s reading is one of the most memorable chapters in David’s life. He longed to bring the Ark of the Covenant, the carrier of God’s presence, back to Jerusalem. His first attempt ended in tragedy because they chose convenience over God’s instructions. After learning from that mistake, David tried again, this time following God’s way. As the Ark entered the city, David couldn’t contain his joy. He danced before the Lord with all his heart, while others looked on with criticism.

This chapter reminds us that God’s presence isn’t something to casually fit into our schedules. It deserves our honor, our obedience, and our wholehearted worship every day of our lives.

Here are three truths that can help us keep God’s presence at the center of our lives.

1. Don’t let familiarity replace reverence.

The Israelites wanted to move the Ark, but they didn’t follow the instructions God had given. They put it on a new cart because it seemed easier and more convenient.

Isn’t that just the way we are in today’s world, sometimes? We can become so familiar with church, worship, prayer, and reading our Bible that they begin to feel routine instead of remarkable. We know the songs, the verses, and even when to say, “Amen,” but our hearts can quietly drift into autopilot. God isn’t interested in us simply checking a spiritual box.

Take time each day to intentionally meet with Him. Before you open your Bible, ask the Holy Spirit to teach you. Before you pray, quiet the distractions for a few moments. Sometimes the greatest difference isn’t how long we spend with God, it’s how present we are when we do.

2. Worship God with your whole heart, not for other people’s approval.

David danced before the Lord because his focus was on God, not on impressing those watching. Michal criticized him for his joyful worship, but David refused to let someone else’s opinion determine how he honored the Lord.

Let’s be honest, we’ve all worried about what people think. We rehearse conversations in our heads, wonder if we said the wrong thing, or change our behavior because we don’t want to stand out. If overthinking burned calories, some of us would never need a gym membership.

But living for God’s approval brings freedom. Maybe your worship isn’t dancing. Maybe it’s serving faithfully when no one notices, praying with someone at work, inviting a friend to church, or simply lifting your hands during worship when you normally wouldn’t. Don’t let fear of people keep you from expressing your love for God.

3. God’s blessings often follow obedience.

After the Ark remained in the house of Obed Edom for three months, God’s blessing on his household was very evident. God’s presence brought blessing, not because the Ark was magical, but because God’s supernatural presence changes lives and cannot be hidden.

Obedience opens the door for God to work in ways we could never accomplish on our own. Maybe God has been nudging you to forgive someone, spend more time in His Word, begin serving, or step out in faith. It may seem like a small act of obedience, but small steps often lead to life changing results.

God isn’t asking for perfection. He’s asking for a willing heart.

Let this chapter be a reminder that God’s presence is the greatest treasure we could ever pursue. Success, recognition, possessions, and accomplishments all fade, but walking closely with the Lord Jesus brings lasting joy and peace. When His presence becomes our priority, everything else begins to find its proper place.

Today I want to encourage you to make room for God’s presence every single day. Don’t settle for going through the motions or allowing your relationship with Him to become routine. Approach Him with a heart that is eager to listen, quick to obey, and unashamed to worship. The more time you spend with Him, the more you’ll discover that His presence brings peace in uncertainty, strength in weakness, wisdom for every decision, and joy that no circumstance can take away. There is no greater place to be than walking closely with the One who loves you most.

Today’s scripture reading: 2 Samuel 6

1 Again David gathered all the choice men of Israel, thirty thousand. 

2 And David arose and went with all the people who were with him from Baale Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, whose name is called by the Name, the Lord of Hosts, who dwells between the cherubim. 

3 So they set the ark of God on a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill; and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drove the new cart. 

4 And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill, accompanying the ark of God; and Ahio went before the ark. 

5 Then David and all the house of Israel played music before the Lord on all kinds of instruments of fir wood, on harps, on stringed instruments, on tambourines, on sistrums, and on cymbals.

6 And when they came to Nachon’s threshing floor, Uzzah put out his hand to the ark of God and took hold of it, for the oxen stumbled. 

7 Then the anger of the Lord was aroused against Uzzah, and God struck him there for his error; and he died there by the ark of God. 

8 And David became angry because of the Lord’s outbreak against Uzzah; and he called the name of the place Perez Uzzah to this day.

9 David was afraid of the Lord that day; and he said, “How can the ark of the Lord come to me?” 

10 So David would not move the ark of the Lord with him into the City of David; but David took it aside into the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 

11 The ark of the Lord remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite three months. And the Lord blessed Obed-Edom and all his household.

12 Now it was told King David, saying, “The Lord has blessed the house of Obed-Edom and all that belongs to him, because of the ark of God.” So David went and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with gladness. 

13 And so it was, when those bearing the ark of the Lord had gone six paces, that he sacrificed oxen and fatted sheep. 

14 Then David danced before the Lord with all his might; and David was wearing a linen ephod. 

15 So David and all the house of Israel brought up the ark of the Lord with shouting and with the sound of the trumpet.

16 Now as the ark of the Lord came into the City of David, Michal, Saul’s daughter, looked through a window and saw King David leaping and whirling before the Lord; and she despised him in her heart. 

17 So they brought the ark of the Lord, and set it in its place in the midst of the tabernacle that David had erected for it. Then David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. 

18 And when David had finished offering burnt offerings and peace offerings, he blessed the people in the name of the Lord of hosts. 

19 Then he distributed among all the people, among the whole multitude of Israel, both the women and the men, to everyone a loaf of bread, a piece of meat, and a cake of raisins. So all the people departed, everyone to his house.

20 Then David returned to bless his household. And Michal the daughter of Saul came out to meet David, and said, “How glorious was the king of Israel today, uncovering himself today in the eyes of the maids of his servants, as one of the base fellows shamelessly uncovers himself!”

21 So David said to Michal, “It was before the Lord, who chose me instead of your father and all his house, to appoint me ruler over the people of the Lord, over Israel. Therefore I will play music before the Lord. 

22 And I will be even more undignified than this, and will be humble in my own sight. But as for the maidservants of whom you have spoken, by them I will be held in honor.”

23 Therefore Michal the daughter of Saul had no children to the day of her death.
